From Architect to GleanerDe l’architecte à la glaneuse

Refusing to write screenplays, Varda reached for architecture: a score can be handed to a player, a floor plan to a builder, but no scenario can be handed to someone else to shoot. This exhibition takes that sentence as its axis.

About

About the exhibitionÀ propos de l’exposition

Agnès Varda is filed at once under Left Bank filmmaker, New Wave pioneer, feminist director, documentary humanist and essay-film auteur. Those labels make her authorship look already settled. This exhibition asks differently: her authorship is produced, repeatedly, inside the films — through form, perspective, material media and public self-curation.

The spine is four films across fifty-four years: Le Bonheur (1965), Sans toit ni loi (1985), Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse (2000), Varda par Agnès (2019), with Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962) and L’une chante, l’autre pas (1977) added in the film pages. Three cuts are taken through them — form, perspective, matter — to argue that the criterion by which her work is judged migrates, step by step, from external institutions into her own practice of looking.

“Architect” and “gleaner” are not two temperaments but two models of authorship. The architect stands for organisation, control and professional legibility; the gleaner for movement, collection, revaluation and self-explanation. She did not abandon form in the late work — she simply no longer needed form to prove anything to anyone.

There is not one film still here. Every graphic is a diagram or swatch drawn from written sources — a rights decision, but also a method: if the argument is about form, the exhibit should be a drawing of the form.

Varda did not enter cinema through Cahiers du cinéma. She came from photography, art history and independent production, and inside a culture built by male cinephiles, critics and auteurs her legitimacy was not assumed — it had to be produced again and again.

Sellier shows that the New Wave, for all its modernity, was strongly constructed by a male network of cinephiles, critics and auteurs. The formal precision of Le Bonheur therefore does two things at once: it admits her to a system of evaluation art-cinema culture can recognise, and it turns that same mastery against the ideology of domestic happiness.

Colour fades in Le Bonheur · swatches drawn here, not film stillsFondus monochromes · nuancier réalisé ici

The picnic and garden scenes are the centre of this apparatus. François, Thérèse and the children are placed again and again inside balanced compositions, surrounded by flowers, sunlight and coordinated colour. The harmony is too arranged to be innocent. After Thérèse’s death Émilie joins the family composition and repeats the earlier visual grammar — and what disturbs is precisely the smoothness of the substitution: the frame absorbs one woman replacing another with no visual crisis at all. Patriarchal continuity is exhibited as a visual structure.

DeRoo therefore reads the film’s critique as visual rhetoric rather than stated narrative judgement; Flitterman-Lewis argues that visual pleasure is the only disguise a mid-1960s feminist critique could wear. The beauty of Le Bonheur is not an evasion of the critique but the condition under which it becomes visible.

Even the colour of reality in the film is controlled shot by shot… There was an orange bench at the train station that we painted grey. A film is controlled second by second. On repainting the world to match the film.Sur le monde repeint pour le film. Varda to Jean Decock, 1988 · on Sans toit ni loi · Kline (ed.), Interviews, pp. 184–95

The remark comes from an interview about Sans toit ni loi, and it punctures the usual story of early rigour giving way to late looseness. The roughest-looking film of 1985 has a surface just as precisely staged: for one red memory she sent a little girl in a red dress out of a bakery; for one wrong colour she had a station bench repainted grey and was told off by the stationmaster for it. Roughness is not the absence of form but a second kind of formal discipline. This is why the four films are read here not as a natural stylistic evolution but as four answers to one persistent pressure.

The politics of perspectiveLa politique du regard

Sans toit ni loi, 1985

The best-known device in Sans toit ni loi is its series of lateral tracking shots. Scholars disagree on how many — twelve, thirteen, fifteen — but in 1988 Varda walked Jean Decock through their construction, and the principle matters far more than the count.

Each tracking shot ends on the object the next one begins with. The landscape is continuous. Mona is not. She enters and leaves mid-shot; the camera neither waits for her nor pursues her. In Varda’s own words, “she’s only one piece of a landscape that is still there. She’s rarely there at the start of the tracking shot, and rarely there at the end.”Chaque travelling s’achève sur l’objet par lequel commence le suivant.

Fig. 1. The chain of tracking shots, reconstructed from Varda’s 1988 account to Decock. Above: the continuous rail and the objects that hinge one shot to the next. Below: Mona’s discontinuous presence. The blackened wall anticipates the charred ditch she is found in. The final track returns the music of the first; her death is the only sequence with no music at all. Fig. 1.

The series was discovered halfway through the shoot. She had already finished half the film when she realised this was exactly what was missing: “It’s funny, even when she’s dead she’ll still be walking, even when she stops she’s still walking.” It cost an extra two and a half weeks, went over budget and put the film in the red. This is not a pre-planned aesthetic scheme but a formal necessity recognised on location.

When she walks, there are no words. Language to the witnesses, silence to Mona, time back to the viewer. The film’s openness is not an absence of explanation but a precise distribution of resources. Varda to Amy Taubin, Film Comment, 2015

The testimonial structure does the other half of the same work. The film opens on Mona’s corpse, so the viewer first meets a body society has already discarded; testimony, encounter and flashback follow, but they never assemble into a complete portrait. Some witnesses praise her freedom, others judge her dirt, her laziness, her refusal of social discipline. Each account describes Mona while exposing the speaker’s own social position and moral judgement — so the film becomes a map of society’s responses rather than a portrait of its subject.

Varda says the last testimony kills her: when all a man can say about a woman is that she has a nice body, she has already been annihilated. The film’s ethics also work through what is not shown — the rape in the woods is off-screen, and the reason is not squeamishness: “in any clinical description of violence there’s always some degree of pleasure shared with the audience.” The whole film holds only four or five close-ups.

DV is not merely a cheaper recording device; it is a material condition of attention. Its lightness let her approach people alone without frightening them: she went first with the small camera, and only if they agreed did she come back with a sound recordist and a better camera. “I think it makes sense for the people to know who you are and how you behave.” The shots of herself she insisted on doing alone — “I wouldn’t ask a director of photography to do that, I’d feel like I’d become narcissistic.”La DV est une condition matérielle de l’attention : approcher seule, revenir avec l’équipe si l’on accepte. Les plans d’elle-même, seule.

If I lie to myself the other hand doesn’t lie… Filming one hand filming the other one, it closes a kind of circle. One hand filming the other: the observer becomes a legitimate object of observation.Une main filmant l’autre : l’observatrice devient objet d’observation. Varda to Julie Rigg, ABC, 2005 · Kline (ed.), Interviews, pp. 232–39

She insists this is not self-pity. People kissed her hands after screenings and called her brave; her answer was that we admire the shape of an old olive tree, so why not the shape of a hand. Ageing is not a subject in this film but a condition of looking — part of the same apparatus as the lightness of the camera and the posture of picking things up. The handless clock works the same way: she set it on the mantelpiece, then had herself pushed slowly past it on a grandson’s skateboard — “time is not passing, but I’m passing”.Ce n’est pas de l’apitoiement : le vieillissement est une condition du regard.

The last step is the cinema shack: strips from her own little-known Les Créatures (1966) assembled into a structure you can walk into. Film stock that might otherwise be treated as outdated or archival becomes building material; cinema stops being an image projected at a viewer and becomes something that can be touched, assembled, entered and reused. The object moves from display to dwelling.

Cléo from 5 to 7Cléo de 5 à 7

A young pop singer waits for a test result that may say cancer. The film follows her through ninety minutes in Paris. The story runs from five o’clock to half past six, and captions keep appearing on screen: Cléo from 5:05 to 5:08.Une jeune chanteuse attend un résultat d’analyse.

The title is a joke. In French usage cinq à sept names the traditional late-afternoon slot for lovers meeting at a hotel — which does not happen in the story. The viewer arrives with one expectation and is given something else.

About halfway through she sings, argues with her musicians, and walks out into the street. That is the hinge of the film: before it she keeps checking her beauty in mirrors; after it she begins to look outward and to actually meet other people.À mi-parcours, après la chanson et la dispute, elle sort dans la rue : la charnière du film.

The time captionsLes cartons horaires十三个章节,每隔几分钟出现一次。 Thirteen chapters, a caption every few minutes. They produce an effect of real time that does not strictly hold: film time and story time are not equal, and the shoot took weeks. It is a carefully constructed illusion of the uncut.
From the staircase shot where her reflection is doubled and reproduced, to the mirrored café, the hand mirror on the bed, and the broken mirror later. Angèle tells her she is always looking at herself. The line is deliberately designed, not decorative.
She walks down the street, pigeons take off; cut to a different angle and the pigeons are still rising, on the same diagonal (bottom right to top left). This is a match on action — the invisible continuity cut of classical Hollywood. The film had one camera, so the effect had to be built from two separate takes. The most natural-looking moment is the most manufactured.
Shot entirely on location, and the geography holds: the people in the background are not actors. Readers have walked the route with the published screenplay in hand — she travels by taxi and bus in the film, so on foot it takes a whole day.Tourné en décors réels ; la géographie tient. À pied, l’itinéraire prend une journée.

Le Bonheur

幸福HappinessLe Bonheur

A carpenter, his wife Thérèse, his lover Émilie. He treats the new desire as an addition rather than a betrayal, as though one woman could be placed beside another without damaging the family structure. After the wife dies, the lover takes her place and the compositions barely change.

The critique is carried entirely by form. Saturated colour fields, symmetrical framing and the order of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 make domestic happiness into an image that is too complete — and it is that completeness that lets a woman’s disappearance be calmly absorbed. Varda does not hand the critique to moral judgement; from a quiet viewing position she lets the viewer notice the violent structure inside the family image.

Whole-frame monochrome transitions between scenes. They cut the film into plates, like the pages of an album, or a catalogue that has been arranged in advance.
Notice that the camera never enters it. Her contentment is presented without analysis; her death is filmed calmly, refusing the emotional guidance narrative cinema usually supplies at such a moment.
When Émilie joins the family composition the visual grammar is identical to before. No visual crisis, no break in the framing — this is the coldest moment in the film.

VagabondSans toit ni loi

The film opens on the body of a young woman frozen to death in a ditch. The police find no papers and the case is closed. The hundred minutes that follow are made of testimony, encounter and brief flashback — and they never assemble into a complete Mona.

Varda gives two reasons for beginning at the death. First, it is a false whodunit lead — there is a body and there are police, but this is not a film about finding a killer. Second, and more importantly, “the dice are not loaded”. The viewer knows from the start that no rescue is coming, so attention cannot go into hoping; it can only go into looking.

Each lateral move ends on an object and the next begins on one: road signs, a tree, farm machinery, a blackened wall, a tyre on a fence post. On a second viewing, watch only this line.
She modified the standard fade to black into a half-fade: witnesses emerge from shadow, their image gradually becoming visible. She called the effect a two-step mirroring — you sense the witness first, and then the witness reflects an image of Mona back.
Only four or five medium close-ups in the whole film: eating sardines, crying, panicking against a car window while hitchhiking in a sleeping bag. Her first line is “There’s me” — she is defined by her first sentence.Quatre ou cinq gros plans moyens. Sa première réplique : « C’est moi ».
The last testimonyLe dernier témoignage瓦尔达说它“杀死了她”。 Varda says it kills her. When all a man can say about a woman is her body, the annihilation is already done.Varda dit qu’il la tue. L’anéantissement est déjà accompli.

L’une chante, l’autre pas

One Sings, the Other Doesn’tL’une chante, l’autre pas

A decade and more in the lives of two women friends. The title refers to them: one becomes a singer, the other does not. This is the one film Varda called feminist without qualification, and the closest her filmmaking ever comes to a social movement actually in progress.

The characters are fictional; the events are not. The film quotes the real course of 1970s France throughout: the women’s liberation movement, the 1971 Manifesto of the 343 (Varda was among its signatories), the public trials over abortion rights, up to decriminalisation in 1975. The lawyer Gisèle Halimi appears in one scene as herself.

It is deliberately accessibleUne accessibilité voulue相对传统的叙事、敞开的情感、歌曲。 Relatively conventional storytelling, open emotion, songs. Not a question of capacity but of orientation: she wanted a general audience, not a small number of intellectuals. That choice cost the film decades of critical standing.Récit conventionnel, émotion ouverte, chansons : un choix qui lui coûta des décennies.
The 1977 French trailer calls it a film full of optimism, full of tears, full of feminism, and promises a film that will make your heart sing. It appeals to the viewer’s own emotional response — exactly what the feminist film theory of the period most distrusted.« Un film qui fera chanter votre cœur » : un appel à l’émotion du spectateur.
Watch it against Le BonheurÀ voir contre Le Bonheur1965 年她把批判藏进美丽的表面里;1977 年她把它直接说出来。 In 1965 she buried the critique inside a beautiful surface; in 1977 she states it outright. Both were judged formally insufficient by the same critics — which suggests the issue was never whether she said it, but in what language.1965 : la critique cachée. 1977 : énoncée. Jugées toutes deux formellement insuffisantes.

Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse

The Gleaners and ILes Glaneurs et la glaneuse

She went out alone with a small DV camera to find the people who live on what others leave: gleaners in the fields, scavengers in the cities, expired food, discarded potatoes, market waste, furniture on the street. The film, she said, is “clearly about gleaners” — not about her.

Then a second question arrived mid-shoot. “Everybody was saying, what’s happening to cinema in the year 2000, what’s happening to this and that in the year 2000. And one day I thought, what’s happening to Agnès in the year 2000?” So she put herself in: the ageing hand, the failing memory, a scrounged clock with no hands. This is not a retreat from the social subject into autobiography but an inclusion of herself in the world of wear she is recording.

Discarded for failing the grade. The film’s whole economic argument rests on this one object: value is not a property of the thing but a product of the grading system.
She says it “closes a kind of circle”: if I lie to myself the other hand doesn’t lie. She insisted on shooting these alone, without a director of photography.« Cela ferme une sorte de cercle. » Ces plans, elle les a faits seule.
The clock with no handsLa pendule sans aiguilles朋友捡来又扔掉的。 Scrounged by a friend and thrown away again. She set it on a cabinet by the window and had herself pushed slowly past it on a grandson’s skateboard — “time is not passing, but I’m passing”. The whole shot is a sentence made physical.
The gender in the titleLe genre du titre法文里 la glaneuse 是一个匿名的女拾穗者;英译 The Gleaners and I 把“我”推到了前面,反而让她比她想要的更显眼。In French la glaneuse is an anonymous woman gleaner; the English The Gleaners and I pushes the “I” forward and makes her more prominent than she intended.

Varda by AgnèsVarda par Agnès

She sits on a stage facing an audience, explains her working method, introduces clips and comments on her own earlier films. Form is no longer displayed as achievement; it is explained, historicised and handed over.

The film’s mechanism is retrospective narration: old footage re-edited and re-narrated by a criterion that is wholly personal and after the fact. It runs both ways — explaining the past and rewriting how the past will be read. When the colours and compositions of 1965 are re-cut and explained in 2019, they no longer belong only to that year’s architectural control; they become part of her late archive of the self. The same image reused from a different historical position is itself the evidence that her authorship keeps being reorganised.

Built from discarded strips of Les Créatures (1966). A film processed by the criticism of its moment and then shelved becomes material you can touch, assemble and enter.Faite de la pellicule rebutée des Créatures (1966).
She acknowledges that her failing eyesight changed what she could see. It is not offered as lament but as one more condition of looking — the criterion has become, completely, her own perception at a particular moment.
She had long been surrounded by affectionate but limiting labels like “grandmother of the New Wave”. Such descriptions acknowledge importance while softening intellectual authority by turning her into a familial figure. The film is a direct answer to that.Réponse directe à l’étiquette « grand-mère de la Nouvelle Vague ».

That Varda is a great auteur looks self-evident today. But the idea has a history, a timeline, channels, and people pushing it. This page takes it apart: her position inside the New Wave, the paratexts around the films, how a cartoon face became a brand logo, and how her reputation was overturned and rebuilt across sixty years.

after Janet Staiger

We habitually ask what Varda is saying in a film. But filmmaking is highly collaborative — many people made these films with her, and describing them as the work of one person is itself a myth. To study how that myth forms, the tools of star studies transfer. Janet Staiger’s model, developed on how Hitchcock created a brand, splits a celebrity image into four parts; they frequently contradict one another, and we only ever reach any of them through mediation.

Those are performances too. We have never met Agnès Varda, or Jacques Demy, or Rosalie. Everything about their private life reaches us mediated, and a large share of the mediating is done by Varda herself — Beaches chooses what to share and what to withhold.

From the seminarNotes de séminaire

The course points this framework straight at its final assignment: analyse how Varda’s authorial persona was constructed and how it evolved across her career, both inside the films and in the discourse around them. That question is what this whole site is organised to answer.

Inside — and beside — the New WaveDans la Nouvelle Vague, et à côté

Her position was always double: inside and not inside. She did not arrive through the Cahiers critics’ route but through photography, art history and independent production, so her legitimacy could not be assumed — it had to be shown.

In 1962 she went to Cannes with the actors of Cléo de 5 à 7. As she says in The Beaches of Agnès, nobody paid any attention to her. The film also went to Venice a few months later and took no major prize at either. The original French trailer of that year is almost entirely story, characters and leading actress; she flickers past at the very end — most audiences in 1962 would not have recognised Agnès Varda.

Yet the reviews of that same year are already doing something else. Georges Sadoul writes that Agnès Varda “proves she is one of our best with this film”, goes back to La Pointe Courte and her shorts, and says she contributed more than anyone else to shaping the New Wave. Jean-Louis Bory opens his review with “Agnès Varda’s film is…”, calls it a masterpiece of technical freedom, and reaches for a comparison that plugs her straight into a literary lineage: Agnès Varda is the Virginia Woolf of modern cinema. Criticism is itself a production line for authorship.

The canon moved far more slowly. The French New Wave: Critical Landmarks in its 1968 first edition did not discuss Varda at all; it discussed Truffaut, Godard, Chabrol and that group. Only in the 2022 edition does Cléo appear on the cover, with a whole new section at the back — “the missing perspective: gender politics and the New Wave” — deliberately putting the period’s women filmmakers and women critics back in.

It was Godard who paid the most attention to the cultivation of a trademark image or silhouette. The significance of this should not be underplayed, as it was one of the key ways in which he began to differentiate himself from other directors in the group. A trademark silhouette is how one member of a group becomes an individual creative artist. Alison Smith, on Godard as auteur-star · quoted in the seminar

Read that next to Varda. Godard used a silhouette to lift himself out of the group; Varda’s recognisable image — colourful clothes, two-tone bowl cut, cartoon face — did not consolidate until forty years later. The same operation, a generation apart. There is a further irony: at Berlin in 1965 Le Bonheur took the Silver Bear, and the Golden Bear went to Godard’s Alphaville. En 1965, l’Ours d’or va à Alphaville.

Marketing

Image, paratext, brandImage, paratexte, marque

The other half, outside the filmsL’autre moitié

Half the material for studying authorship is not in the films at all. Posters, trailers, interviews, reviews, festivals, DVD extras, merchandise — the texts circulating around a film are its paratexts. They produce our idea of a director just as the films do, and they frequently contradict one another.

The precedent is Hitchcock. From very early in his career he was an outstanding self-promoter: he drew his own caricature silhouette and by the 1950s it was marketing his films and his television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents, which he introduced on camera every week. Audiences knew what he looked like — a director consumed as a star. Janet Staiger’s essay is titled “Creating the Brand: The Hitchcock Touch”.Le précédent est Hitchcock : sa silhouette dessinée, sa série télévisée, un réalisateur consommé comme une vedette.

Varda’s equivalent arrives much later. The cartoon head was first drawn by a cartoonist friend, used on the poster for The Beaches of Agnès, and then across the marketing. Today the Ciné-Tamaris shop sells it on stickers, badges and T-shirts. A British label, Girls on Tops, which makes T-shirts celebrating women filmmakers, carried her name and that face as one of its early designs. Google ran a doodle on her birthday: young Varda, old Varda, a cine camera, a beach. This is already the logic of a logo — the same images repeated until they circulate independently of the person.

From the seminar · one objectNotes · un objet

课上传看了 2012 年前后发行的 DVD 全集 Tout(e) Varda(现已绝版,影片多数已重新修复)。 The seminar passed round the Tout(e) Varda DVD box set of around 2012, now out of print and superseded by restorations. It is worth analysing as an exhibit in its own right:Le séminaire fait circuler le coffret Tout(e) Varda (v. 2012, épuisé). Un objet à analyser comme tel :

Two films per case, usually a fiction paired with a documentary, often decades apart — Vagabond with The Gleaners and I. Not chronological: the pairing forces a thematic line into view, both films on marginal people in rural France.
The Ciné-Tamaris company logo is a cat, seen at the head of the films. Not an arbitrary mark: she loved cats, cats recur throughout her work, and she made a short film in homage to her own cat Zgougou. A private affection turned into corporate identity.
The classic image on the box — the director standing right beside the camera — is a posed publicity photograph. On a real set the director is mostly not beside the camera, because other technicians operate it. The photograph deletes the entire crew from the frame.
The booklet repeats the heart-shaped potato. It is on screen for seconds in The Gleaners and I, yet becomes the film’s key marketing image and then returns in Deux ans après and The Beaches of Agnès. A chance find promoted to an emblem.
Every set contains a strip of real film print from one of her films — which one is unidentifiable; you have to hold it to the light. Once digital projection arrived, 35mm prints became waste. She cut her company archive into souvenirs for viewers, and into the shack you can walk inside in Varda par Agnès. One gleaning gesture, issued as merchandise at one end and as art at the other.
Also a cat stencil, a make-a-face game, a wooden piece carrying the ring image from Cléo, postcards, a photograph she took in Portugal in the 1950s as a still photographer, a hat standing in for Chris Marker — and a cooking recipe. Together they extend exactly the figure the films give us: someone in a market turning over discarded objects, curious.

The DVD extras are themselves curated by her. Some are archival — old television documentaries from the year of the shoot; but a large share are small films made specially for the collection, in which she talks about a film decades later, often alongside the actors and technicians who made it with her. Far more personal than a Hollywood making-of — and some of that material was later cut into The Beaches of Agnès. She recycles herself continuously.

The sharpest instance is a 1964 television documentary about her. Years later she re-edited it and added her own titles, pointing out the choices the original crew had made — they had chosen images of her at the camera, to suggest a director. She is using a paratext to criticise a paratext.

It is not fixedElle n’est pas fixe

A director’s reputation is not a finished thing. Some of her films were sharply rejected in their moment and revalued decades later; others that won prizes are now discussed on entirely different grounds. The timeline itself is the exhibit.Une réputation n’est jamais close : certains films rejetés puis réévalués, d’autres primés puis discutés autrement.

Claire Johnston, in “Women’s Cinema as Counter-Cinema”, attacks by name: Varda’s oeuvre “celebrates bourgeois myths of women”, Le Bonheur above all, its style “one of the nearest approximations to the facile daydreams produced by advertising”, and “a retrograde step in women’s cinema”.Claire Johnston : une œuvre qui « célèbre les mythes bourgeois de la femme », un « pas en arrière ».

Jill Forbes, in The Cinema in France: After the New Wave, still writes that Le Bonheur “remains for many viewers an unforgivable film”, filmed in “a visual repertoire reminiscent of soap powder advertisements”.Jill Forbes : « un film impardonnable », « un répertoire visuel de publicité pour lessive ».
The Gleaners and I — which she expected to run two weeks — travels to some seventy festivals and plays in Paris for around fifty weeks. The critical vocabulary turns a third time: personal, curious.Les Glaneurs : soixante-dix festivals, cinquante semaines à Paris.

The Cinémathèque française in Paris mounts Viva Varda! (October 2023 – January 2024): artefacts, props, costumes, photographs, a complete retrospective, and a dense programme of talks. Le Monde’s magazine cover reads Vardamania. Netflix France buys rights to several of the best-known films and markets them as “rediscover the filmography of Agnès Varda”, with her portrait looking straight out — a set of films bundled into a single author.La Cinémathèque française monte Viva Varda ! ; Le Monde titre Vardamania.

That Varda is a feminist filmmaker is close to consensus today. Yet in the 1970s some of the most important feminist film theorists in Britain attacked her by name — and attacked precisely the films now treated as her major work. Understanding that requires understanding how strict the period’s demands were about what a feminist film had to look like.

France in the 1970s: what the film points atLa France des années 1970

L’une chante, l’autre pas · 1977

L’une chante, l’autre pas (1977) follows two women friends; the title refers to them — one sings, the other doesn’t. This is the film Varda herself called feminist without qualification, and its fiction is embedded directly in real events. Without those events it reads as no more than a gentle film about friendship.L’une chante, l’autre pas (1977) : deux amies, l’une chante, l’autre non.

After May 1968 France enters a period of significant social upheaval. An organised feminist movement takes shape over the following years.

The Manifesto of the 343: 343 women declare in a high-profile magazine that they have had abortions, many of them public figures and artists. Varda was one of the signatories. Abortion was still illegal in France; signing was a deliberate provocation — then prosecute us all.Le Manifeste des 343 : elles déclarent avoir avorté. Varda est signataire. L’avortement est alors illégal.
The lawyer Gisèle Halimi wins an acquittal for a teenager who had an abortion after being raped. The public attention around the case pushes the law forward. Halimi appears in the film as herself in one scene.L’avocate Gisèle Halimi obtient un acquittement retentissant.

Abortion is decriminalised in France.L’avortement est dépénalisé.
The film is released. The characters are fictional, but their lives quote those events throughout. It is the closest her filmmaking ever comes to an ongoing social movement.

In The Beaches of Agnès she looks back on being an angry feminist in the seventies. Asked in 2009 whether the fight still mattered, her answer was flat: “Yes… read the paper. The fight is just beginning in many parts of the world.”Dans Les Plages elle se rappelle féministe en colère.

The case against

From the late 1960s into the 1970s, film theory in western Europe entered a highly politicised phase in which Marxism and psychoanalysis were combined to critique “bourgeois ideology”. One central claim: changing the content is not enough — the form itself has to be radical. By that standard, filming feminist subject matter in conventional cinematic language is not progress but a reproduction of the very structures of representation it opposes. Laura Mulvey’s “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” (1975) is the best-known text in this line, but she was not the only one.

Women’s Cinema as Counter-CinemaLe cinéma des femmes comme contre-cinéma

The films of Agnès Varda are a particularly good example of an oeuvre which celebrates bourgeois myths of women… Varda’s portrayal of a female fantasy constitutes one of the nearest approximations to the facile daydreams produced by advertising that probably exists in the cinema.

She goes on: Varda’s work is “reactionary”, “a retrograde step in women’s cinema”, and Le Bonheur the worst instance. The charge is not about subject matter but about style: it looks like advertising — beautiful and hollow.Œuvre « réactionnaire », « pas en arrière ».

To Desire DifferentlyTo Desire Differently

…expresses an assertively feminist content through fairly traditional cinematic means. [It] operates on the assumption that the image of the woman is unproblematic.

She is writing about L’une chante, l’autre pas: an avowedly feminist film that nonetheless “fails to offer a serious challenge to the dominant structures of representation, a challenge which forms the core of any alternative cinema”. Note that she is not dismissing Varda — the same book is positive on Cléo, on Vagabond, even on Le Bonheur. The feminist camp was never one voice.

The Cinema in France: After the New WaveLe cinéma en France

Varda’s Le Bonheur remains for many viewers an unforgivable film… filmed in an idiom that sets one’s teeth on edge, a visual repertoire that is reminiscent of soap powder advertisements.

She says the film gave Varda a reputation for idealism, conventionality and an inability to be socially critical. Notice the metaphor is nearly the same as Johnston’s — two independent texts, twenty years apart, both landing on advertising. And yet the cover of her book carries Mona from Vagabond.

The original French trailer of 1977 is almost a perfect specimen of the disagreement. The voiceover describes the film as full of optimism, full of tears, full of feminism, and promises a film that will make your heart sing. Notice what that appeals to: not the emotions of the characters but the emotional response of the viewer. That is exactly what 1970s feminist film criticism most distrusted — the belief that a strong emotional pull limits the audience’s capacity to think.

And that was Varda’s own choice. She wanted this film to reach a general audience rather than a small number of intellectuals. In the theoretical climate of the time, that intention is precisely what kept the film undervalued for decades.C’était son choix : elle voulait un public large.

The peers the theorists approved ofLes contemporaines approuvées

To see where Varda stood, look at who stood beside her. In 1975 — around the time L’une chante was being made — two films by women filmmakers won the strong approval of theorists like Johnston and Mulvey. They sit at nearly the opposite pole from Varda’s practice.

Akerman made it in her early twenties: a Belgian housewife, about three and a half hours, most of it filming her performing mundane household tasks — cleaning, cooking. No conventional narrative structure; techniques of de-dramatisation and what we would now call slow cinema, partly so that the audience feels the boredom of that existence directly. Rediscovered in recent years by a new generation.

Duras began as a novelist, wrote screenplays in the late sixties, then directed. Formally this goes further than Jeanne Dielman — genuinely avant-garde, using experimental technique to represent women’s experience in a way utterly unlike mainstream cinema. Most audiences find it very hard going.Duras, romancière puis cinéaste : formellement plus radical encore, franchement expérimental.

And VardaEt Varda

L’une chante, l’autre pas · 1977

By comparison Varda’s film is accessible: relatively conventional storytelling, emotions left open, songs. Not a question of capacity but of orientation — she wanted people to come, and to be moved. Within the critical frame of 1975, the price of that choice was a verdict of formal insufficiency.

The change came from two directions. Time: the extremely theorised demands of the 1970s stopped being the only measure, and later generations came to the films without having been steeped in that frame. And direct scholarly defence — Rebecca DeRoo’s 2018 monograph gives Le Bonheur a chapter that argues explicitly against Johnston and Forbes, reading the film’s critique as visual rhetoric rather than stated narrative judgement.

Gallery I of this exhibition stands on that side, but tries to put it more precisely: the beauty of Le Bonheur is not an evasion of the critique but the condition under which the critique becomes visible. French film culture in 1965 was still shaped by male critical authority; for a woman director to be heard at all she had first to demonstrate command of its language. The saturated colour, the symmetry, the Mozart are simultaneously the ticket in and the weapon. And the substitution disturbs precisely because the frame absorbs it without a seam.

The real lesson of the argument may not be who was right. It is that the political evaluation of a film depends on the frame reading it, and frames get replaced. When we call Varda a feminist filmmaker today we are saying: within our present frame, she is. In fifty years another frame will reach another conclusion.

The working vocabularyLe vocabulaire de travail

6 entriesentrées
Varda’s own term for the fact that a film is written by the way it is filmed, not by its screenplay. Her working definition is a list: fixed or moving shots, colour or black and white, camera and lens, editing, music or none, the mix. It pulls authorship back from abstract style to concrete labour: the author organises dispersed technical work into a form with direction.
建筑师的图纸the architect’s floor planle plan de l’architecteDecock, 1988
The metaphor she used when refusing to write scenarios, and the source of this exhibition’s title. A score is a sign, and someone else can play it. A floor plan is a sign, and someone else can build it. But a scenario is not the writing of a film: it does not specify the lighting, the lens, the speed of a track or the timing of a line, and cannot measure whether a silence runs two seconds or seven. So she wrote two pages instead and used them as a dare — she was tired of well-written scenarios being refused for bureaucratic reasons, and of the fact that scenarios can be bought.
She defines the artist’s work as gleaning outright: reading something, overhearing a story, sitting in a café — “artists glean… we look, pick and then use things.” As a method it has three moves: follow what appears, collect what is left behind, and put marginal people and discarded objects inside one order of attention.
The mechanism by which the late film repossesses the early work: footage re-edited and re-narrated by an entirely personal criterion. It runs both ways, explaining the past and rewriting how the past will be read. This exhibition admits it is a product of that mechanism.
A visual quality that invites the viewer to attend to the surface texture and material presence of the image rather than only to what it depicts. It names the difference between Le Bonheur and The Gleaners: the first has a closed, transparent surface and its pleasure gathers around an object with clean edges; the second pushes its surface forward — rotting potatoes, market leftovers, wrinkles, handheld unsteadiness. It also places discarded matter, marginal labour and the director’s own body inside one material structure of looking.

A term for how an authorial image is organised through the material around the films: box sets, supplements, interviews, viewing platforms. It reminds us that late Varda’s persona is produced not only inside the films but continually through marketing, criticism, festivals, social media and public appearances — which is why the 2019 film is not only a summary but a legible construction of a legacy.

Reverse-engineered from 1985D’après 1985

This is not style imitation but an executable rule. Varda only discovered the series was missing halfway through the shoot — so you can add it to a film already in production.

Fix the direction, not the subject.Fixer la direction, non le sujet. Every lateral move uses the same direction and the same speed. The movement belongs to the landscape, not to the person.Même direction, même vitesse : le mouvement appartient au paysage.
Make a list of objects.Dresser une liste d’objets. Road signs, a tree, machinery, a wall, a tyre, a phone booth — things that can recur, differ from one another, and still belong to one geography. The objects are the joints of the chain.
End each shot on the next one’s opening. The first stops on a road sign; the second begins on another road sign. Nobody counts them, but everyone feels the landscape never breaks.
The subject enters late and leaves early.Le sujet entre tard, sort tôt. Never have them already in frame when the shot begins, and never let them hold it to the end. The camera neither waits nor pursues.Jamais présent à l’ouverture, jamais tenu jusqu’au bout.
Give the music its own line.Donner à la musique sa ligne. In 1985 the tracking shots, played end to end, reproduce the full piece heard under the opening credits. The last track returns the theme of the first and closes the circuit.
Leave the heaviest scene silent.Laisser la scène la plus lourde muette. Her death is the only sequence with no music at all — “too emotional to be accompanied by music”.Sa mort est la seule séquence sans musique : « trop émouvante pour être accompagnée ».

All nine seminar files are auto-transcribed and the quality is poor: names are almost uniformly mangled (Flitterman-Lewis becomes “fitman Lewis”, Claire Johnston “Claire John Suan”, Chantal Akerman “shant havedd ackermann”), and titles and years drift. Where this site uses that material, every name, title and date has been checked separately, and anything unverifiable is flagged or omitted. Any quotation traced to the seminar should be treated as paraphrase, not as quotable text — go back to the published source before citing.

A extraction artefactUn artefact d’extraction

In the extracted text the fi/fl ligatures were dropped (film becomes “lm”, different becomes “di erent”). Check spelling against the original PDF before quoting from those files; the quotations on this site have been repaired by hand.
